The earlier history of 346 can hardly be separated from that of the adjoining 345, now as Ricketts Cottage, and even today the two properties are very much interconnected.
As with most property in Petworth 345/346 was copyhold of the Leconfield Estate, being enfranchised in 1832 and hence no longer subject to the manorial court.

A Fête in Petworth Park 1835, by William Witherington (1785—1865)
This was the second of two great feasts laid on by the 3rd Earl of Egremont for local people. 4,000 invitations were sent out to locals but on the day almost 6,000 people turned up. The Earl could not bear to see hungry people at his gates, so all guests were fed. On top of the hill to the left, you can see the 3rd Earl on horseback greeting guests. In the foreground the boy chasing a butterfly is thought to be the Earl’s son.
The event was repeated the following year and continues today, organised by the Petworth & District Community Association.

George O’Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837) by Thomas Phillips (1770-1845)
The 3rd Earl spent 74 years at Petworth, giving this period of the House’s history the title of ‘the Golden Age’. He inherited Petworth at the age of 12 and became a great agriculturalist, philanthropist and patron to a whole generation of British painters and sculptors, including JMW Turner and Flaxman. Like many wealthy young men of his day, he had many mistresses and is rumoured to have fathered over 50 children, although only 12 can be accurately traced.

Petworth Station and Railway
In 1859, the Mid Sussex Railway extended the single track line from Horsham to Pulborough and Petworth. The Petworth Station was at Coultershaw, some way from the town so that Petworth House was not troubled by smoke and noise! The line was extended to Midhurst in 1866. The original station was demolished in 1889 and was replaced the following year with the current fine building. With the advent of the motorcar and charabanc, the station was used by passengers travelling to Goodwood for the races.
The last passenger service to Petworth was in 1955 and the last goods train was in 1966.

Pump Barrels - How does it work?
There are three pump barrels, each containing a piston which pumps water on its down stroke. A seal between the piston and pump barrel is made by back-to-back leather plungers. The pump draws water from the main culvert through a ‘clack-valve’ (or flap valve) into the chamber on the upstroke. Pumping takes place on the down stroke. Water was pumped to Petworth, 1½ miles (2.4 km) away through a 3 in (7.6 cm) cast iron pipe, which still partially exists. A pressure of 75-80 psi (5.5 bar) was required to reach the town. The air vessel, added about 1830, reduces pressure fluctuations from the output from the three pump chambers by compressing air in the top half of the cylinder. The Beam Pump ceased pumping water to Petworth in 1960. It now supplies the fountain at a pressure of about 10 psi (0.7 bar) so that the pump may be seen working.

The Beam Pump
The beam pump was built in 1782 to improve the water supply to Petworth. Before that, Petworth had to rely on a limited water supply from springs and conduits, private wells, and later rainwater tanks.
The beam pump is powered by its own waterwheel and pumped river water a distance of 2.4km and up 54m (1½ miles and 178ft) through 75mm (3”) pipes. The water was stored in two cisterns, one on Lawn Hill in Petworth Park, which still exists, and the other at the top of Grove Street. The pump could deliver 90,000 litres (20,000 gallons) a day. It was untreated and not intended for human consumption, but was, no doubt, drunk by some.
In 1839 it supplied 137 private taps owned by 69 people in the town and 7 public cocks. In Petworth house there are two taps over the sink, one for river water and one for spring water.
Although a new supply of spring water was developed at Haslingbourne, the pump continued to pump water to Petworth until 1960 – in the latter years just for horticultural purposes. It now produces a spout of water next to the Pump House that can be seen on open days.
Fortunately, the beam pump and wheel survived the demolition of the mill and, once large quantities of rubble were removed, it was restored to working order by the Sussex Industrial Archeological Society. The work took 5 years and it started to pump again in May 1980.

The Boardwalk and West River Bank
A walk along the boardwalk will allow you to see the path of the old Rother Navigation as it passes under the road to where there was once a lock before it rejoined the river a few hundred metres upstream.
Next to the lock was the old Tollhouse that served the Petworth to Chichester Turnpike. The bridges were built in 1800 so that the old road could be diverted from Rotherbridge upstream, to form the new Turnpike road. The tollhouse was last used in 1877 and the cottage was demolished soon after.

Lower part dates from c1350, with a steeple built of wood & lead by a Parson Acon.
It slanted perilously, thus the rhyme - “Proud Petworth, poor people, high church, crooked steeple”
Taken down in 1800 and replaced in 1827 with spire of brick covered with stucco, designed by Charles Barry.
This spire was condemned as dangerous in 1947 & demolished.
The tower stucco then found to be dangerous & was stripped.
In 1953 the tower was completed by a parapet and low-tiled roof.
An excellent ring of 8 bells, the heaviest. being 18cwt 19lbs, visited regularly by touring ringers.

The Dawtrey Tomb
On the north wall of the Chapel of St Thomas is the tomb of Sir John Dawtrey (d. 1542) and his wife Jane. Dawtrey left money to repair church vestments, and also to pay for masses to be sung for himself and his wife, who predeceased him.
The elaborately carved tomb is made of Caen stone, with a mix of gothic and Renaissance carving. The central panel once bore a carving of the Annunciation, but this was defaced at the Reformation and now has the letters IHC instead. There are heraldic shields on the frieze over the canopy, at the back of the tomb recess, and on the tomb base.
The figures of Sir John and Lady Jane each kneel at their own prayer desk, rather than facing each other across a single desk as is often the case. Lady Jane's desk simply has a book on top, but Sir John's also has mailed gauntlets and a helmet to indicate his status as a knight.

The Old Mill
There have been a variety of Mills at Coultershaw for many hundreds for years: corn mills, fulling mills and malting mills. A mill was first recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086 and the last was demolished in 1973. The early mills were to the north of the road. It is thought that the first mill on the present site was built in the 17th century. These mills were in the space, now grassed where the fountain is, between the Pump House and the Archimedes screw.
In 1907, John Gwillim, who already owned mills at Midhurst and Fittleworth took on the lease for Coultershaw Mill from the Petworth Estate. Sadly, the mill was destroyed by fire in 1923 and the following year the Estate rebuilt the mill with a modern ferro-concrete structure that lacked the rural charm as its predecessor.
John Gwillim died in 1929 and his son Gordon took over the business. The mill produced high quality flour that supplied, amongst others, the Cunard line at Southampton. When Gordon died in 1969, John’s wife Dorothy continued the business until the lease was surrendered and the mill closed in 1972. The building was demolished in 1973.

By the 1920s it was only used at Christmas.
Between the range and the table is a large warming trolley for plates and pans which also protected the centre table from the heat.

The Rother Navigation
The River Rother was improved in 1794 to make it navigable. The meanders in the river were cut off and 8 locks were built between Stopham near Pulborough and Midhurst. One of the locks is just the other side of the road to the boardwalk. This allowed goods to be brought from the Wey and Arun Canal down from London or up from the sea at Littlehampton along to Midhurst. The nearby railway had a negative impact on trade and the Navigation was closed in 1888.
At the warehouse you can learn more about the various goods that were transported and see where the horses were kept.

Water Wheel - How does it work?
Water from the River Rother comes under the road in a culvert. Most of the water is used to operate the waterwheel, controlled by a vertical penstock- a gate raised by a rack and pinion mechanism.

Why are the beams so long?
With its long beams this pump is unusual.
For the pump to work properly, each pump rod must move vertically up and down in its pump cylinder. If this does not happen, the pump rod will get stuck! Using a long beam is a simple way to make the pump rod move vertically.
Each beam is pivoted at one end with the other end connected to the pump rod. Powered by the waterwheel, the crankshaft and connecting rod move the beam up and down. The pump rod (attached to the outer free end of the beam) moves in a very shallow circle to produce an almost straight-line motion.
The longer the beams, the shallower the circular motion and the nearer the pump rods are to moving in a straight line. So the longer the beams, the better!
